New CDL-A drivers
Just earned your Class A, or finishing school? Many carriers hire new drivers with paid training. The details differ a lot, so here is what to look at.
What a new-driver program usually includes
- Orientation, then time on the road with a trainer (mentor) before you drive solo.
- Pay during training, usually lower than solo pay.
- A path to your own truck after training. Timelines and rules vary by carrier.
What carriers look at
- A valid Class A CDL or a permit with school completed. Some carriers require a minimum number of school hours.
- Driving record and background check, DOT medical card and a drug screen.
- Minimum age. Many carriers require 21; some require more for certain jobs.
Questions to ask before you pick a program
- How much does training pay, and for how long?
- Is there a training contract, and what happens if I leave early?
- Who pays for the road test, lodging and travel to orientation?
- How long until I drive solo and get my own truck?
- What is the home-time schedule in training and after?
